HONORABLE MENTION

The new library of Pinocchio in the historic center of Collodi is the opportunity to desig the largest children’s library inspired by one of the most important tales that have influenced the international imagination in the last two centuries. The intervention is also an opportunity torethink the territorial development of thearea by creating a new urban center and revitalizing an area of important historical interest characterized by the presence of an ancient paper factory.

The future key of the architectural intervention is to create a point of contact between the Pinocchio theme park and the maximization of the historical value of the existing paper factory. While a simple monolith creates a formal continuity with the existing building, a new path extends from the park to the main north-west entrance of the new library.

The building addresses its appearance in the reinterpretation of the industrial typology.

The existing paper factory has the particularity of having the last level, historically used for drying paper, different from the first two floors which take the role of “basement”.

The first two levels of the new intervention are the natural continuation of the existing “basement”, instead the last 4 levels extend itself upwards surrounded by a translucent material that become a landmark for the surrounding area.

Through the light control of the last 4 floors, different atmospheres can be activated in the evening hours, and furthermore, the translucent material allows during the day to have the interior illuminated by the natural light.

In the void between the library and the paper factory, a new garden extends the interior spaces outside as well as highlighting the

vertical presence of the existing chimney.
